Here are the steps you need to take to repaint your coffee table:
1. Set up the area in which you intend to paint. You should use a highly ventilated area like a garage or even on your driveway. Set up drop cloth around where you will be painting because there will be spillage.
2. You need to remove the current paint or protective coating to get back to the base wood of the table. You can use varnish or paint remover from the hardware store. Simply follow the directions on the package. If you run into paint or varnish that doesn't want to come off then you can use sandpaper.
3. Once the paint/varnish is removed make sure the surface of the table is very clean. No debris should be on it.
4. Now it's time to paint. Add one layer of paint at a time. Let it dry before you add the next layer. Keep adding paint until you get the desired look.
5. Finally the protective layer. This is optional. If you want to add an additional layer of protection against damage you can add a clear coat protectant. This is up to you.
